Approved candidates for October 17 by-elections and start of campaign period

The Commission met on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 to, among other issues, review the nomination papers received from candidates on September 8, 2017.

A total of 19 nominations, 15 men and 4 women, were received for all the six areas where the by-elections will take place. Having gone through all the nomination papers and supporting documents, the Commission has found that all candidates are eligible to contest. They are as follows:

The Commission is reminding all stakeholders that a candidate can be disqualified at any point before polling if information is availed that could have led to disqualification during nomination stage.

In view of that, members of the public are encouraged to inform the Commission if they have justifiable evidence or information challenging the eligibility of the above-listed candidates.

The information will be treated in confidence and should be submitted in writing stating name of candidate, the ward or constituency being vied for and specific criterion not met.

Candidates and political parties should also note that the official campaign period commences on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 and will end at 6am on October 15, 2017.

Political parties, candidates and other stakeholders are advised to abide by the Code of Conduct for Political Parties and Candidates they signed for and also to observe all electoral laws and regulations.

The Commission is also reminding all the contesting candidates or their representatives that inspection of the ballot paper template will be on Friday, September 15, 2017 at the MEC head office in Blantyre between 9AM and 12PM. MEC will still proceed to print ballot papers even in the event of a candidate or representative failing to show up for the exercise.
