Former MEC Chairman, Justice Kalaile Honoured Posthumously

Former Malawi Electoral Commission, late Justice James Kalaile has been honoured posthumously for his pivotal role in establishment and growth of the Electoral Commissions Forum for SADC Countries in 1998.

The award, which was announced during the 25th Annual General Conference of the ECF SADC held in November 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa, was handed over to the family on Friday, 23 February 2024 in Blantyre by MEC Chairman, Justice Dr Chifundo Kachale.

During the award presentation, Justice Dr. Kachale lauded the late Justice Kalaile SC as a devoted patriot whose service extended beyond borders, exemplified by his instrumental role in laying the foundation of the ECF-SADC.

Justice Dr. Kachale emphasized the late Kalaile’s enduring legacy of upholding principles of justice, urging attendees to reflect not only on his professional achievements but also on the warmth, wisdom, and integrity he embodied throughout his career.

Representing the family, Mr. James Kalaile, Junior expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing it as a source of joy and pride.

He extended heartfelt thanks to the Chairman and Commissioner for honouring his father’s legacy. 

Late Justice James Kalaile served as MEC Chairman from 1999 to 2004 and he passed away on 14 October 2021, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to justice and public service.

In addition to his tenure as a Judge in the Judiciary and Chairman of the Commission, the late Justice Kalaile SC held several esteemed positions, including being the first Malawian Chief Parliamentary Draftsman, Solicitor General, Secretary for Justice, and Chairperson of the Malawi Public Service Commission.

The award handover event was attended by members of the Kalaile family, Commissioner Francis Kasaila, and staff from the Malawi Electoral Commission.
