The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has appointed Mr Andrew Kamkwalala as Acting Chief Elections Officer, with immediate effect, following the resignation of Mr Andrew Mpesi.
In a Public Notice issued on 25 September 2026, MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja said the appointment follows Mr Mpesi’s resignation after serving as the Commission’s Chief Elections Officer from 22 August 2022 to 21 August 2026.
“The Commission wishes to announce the appointment of Mr. Andrew Kamkwalala as Acting Chief Elections Officer, with immediate effect. The appointment follows the resignation of Mr. Andrew Mpesi, who served as the Commission’s Chief Elections Officer, from 22 August 2022 to 21 August 2026,” Justice Mtalimanja said.
Mr Kamkwalala is currently the Commission’s Deputy Chief Elections Officer (Finance and Administration), a position he has held since joining the Commission on 1 November 2022.
The Chairperson said Mr Kamkwalala would lead the Secretariat while the Commission works on arrangements to fill the position substantively.
“The Commission calls upon all stakeholders to accord him the necessary cooperation and support as he leads the Secretariat during this period whilst the Commission works on modalities of filling the position substantively,” Justice Mtalimanja said.
