The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has been elected to the Executive Board of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) for a two-year term covering 2026 to 2028, during the organisation’s 7th General Assembly in Manila, Philippines, held from 13 to 17 October 2026.
Malawi was elected alongside the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Senegal, joining Kenya and Uganda, which were already serving on the Executive Board representing the Africa Region.
Other newly elected members were Argentina, Peru, Puerto Rico, Bhutan, Mongolia, Palestine, Indonesia, Samoa and the Philippines, which assumed the chairmanship of the Association.
A-WEB is a global network of 121 Election Management Bodies (EMBs) from 111 countries. It promotes international cooperation, knowledge-sharing and the exchange of good practices to strengthen credible, inclusive, transparent and professionally managed elections.
MEC’s election provides Malawi with an opportunity to contribute to A-WEB’s strategic direction and the global elections agenda. Through its participation, the Commission will be able to share Malawi’s electoral experiences, learn from other election management institutions and contribute to international discussions on electoral integrity, emerging technologies, public trust and democratic governance.
The appointment also creates opportunities to strengthen partnerships with electoral institutions worldwide and promote practical solutions to common electoral challenges.
MEC’s election to the Executive Board reflects its commitment to international electoral cooperation and to advancing credible, transparent and inclusive electoral processes.
